Getting ready

Seems easy, just jump on a plane and go to Brazil. But first we need a Visa, which involves two trips to the Brazilian Consulate in San Francisco. We also needed inoculations for these:

Typhoid
Hepatitis
Tetanus
Yellow Fever

and medication for Malaria. We'll be on those pills for 1 week before we go and 4 weeks after we return. This medical travel page has enough Amazon river travel advice to convince many not to go at all.

And finally, did you know every year in Africa, Malaria kills 1 million children? And a great deal of those deaths are preventable? The number of yearly cases, worldwide, 350-500 million, is staggering. There are huge efforts underway to prevent and treat the disease. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is well known for its significant efforts. A good resource regarding Malaria control is here.
